About Shri Aurobindo Ashram
Pondicherry is an important destination for spiritual seekers as well as tourists. Shri Aurobindo Ashram is other major attraction in Pondicherry, with bevy of devotees from all over world. In this Ashram tourists can indulge in Yoga and meditation surrounded by beautiful and colorful flowers. One can get relieved from stress of hustling city life.
Shri Aurobindo Ashram got setup in form of a small community of Aurobindo’s disciples after he settled in Pondicherry in 1910. In 1926 Sri Aurobindo gave-up full responsibility of the Ashram to his spiritual collaborator, Mirra Alfassa – known as, "the Mother” to all.
Today Ashram has outgrown from just few buildings to over hundereds of buildings spread over the Pondicherry town. The Ashram’s main building is the one where Sri Aurobindo and the Mother lived most of their lives and meditated. There is a white marble shrine - “Samadhi” in this compound which holds the physical remains of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother.
Today Ashram has departments such as library, art gallery, nursing home, playground, book printing, gardens, guest houses, bakery, farms and dairies etc.
Thousands of people from all over the world come to Shri Aurobindo Ashram in search of a spiritual experience. Shri Aurobindo Ashram does not have any branches and the one in Delhi is another organization altogether.
